09/13/2016 Faces in the Sun

AUTHOR: TOWNE SCHERER.COM 09/13/2016: Towne Scherer Private Wealth Management Blog

This week I began thinking about Mt. Rushmore. There it was in my minds eye. Like a nasty fly, I couldn’t get rid of it.  So I just thought about it.  The background eventually became obscure, and then, all I could see were those granite faces in the sun.

Doane Robinson, a historian, promoted the Rushmore idea in order to increase tourism in the area.  The sculptor, Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers began the work in 1927, and finished 1941.  It was funded by our tax dollars (no surprise).  The site was chosen by Gutzon because the mountain faced southeast and had the greatest sun exposure.

The idea was to carve the four presidents of the last 150 years who started, preserved, and expanded our wonderful country.  George Washington is the Father of our country.  Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, doubled the size of our country purchasing the Louisiana Territory.  Abraham Lincoln, by his shear will and courage, kept our country together during the civil war.  Theodore Roosevelt is the fourth face.  He is legendary for his love of nature, courage, and zest for life.

As I gazed upon these four carved figures in the granite stone, with their faces shining in the morning sun, I realized there was something wrong.  Mt. Rushmore made me look to the past, and wish these men were still living.  I began hoping they would guide our country out of its current confusion and back to its intended purpose … those of our founding fathers.  This picture began birthing a false hope, a vain imagination.  Conscious of this, I turned my attention to the future and I pictured those faces again.  However, this time, hope took root in me and I saw something I didn’t expect … carved in Mt. Rushmore were four new faces in the sun.

The lesson of history teaches that great leaders are born for adversity.  You can depend upon this lesson.  Therefore, I believe there will be raised up, in our generation, new faces in the sun.  They are men and women, who are solid in goodness, integrity and wisdom.  They are currently learning what it means to choose the good and refuse the bad... leaders who will be beyond reproach and cannot bought.  They will be the restorers of the old foundations ... foundations of hope and life.  There they are, sparkling in the granite rock – the new faces in the sun. Can you see them too?
