The ‘Ides of September’
Beware the ‘Ides of September’ when it comes to the stock market, says Investopedia 1/10/2022, instead of March as Shakespeare has intimated. Indeed, historically, the worst month yearly for the stock market has been Sweet September with some having even dubbed the phenomenon with this moniker….’The September Effect.’ And this effect is not just American but international, with some analysts attributing ‘The September Effect’ to investor propensity at summer’s end, to liquidating equities, then placing the proceeds into cash.
Then there are always the facts:
Since 1950, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) has averaged a decline of 0.8% in ‘Sweet September.’ Will this end in a Shakespeare tragedy with Fed Chairman Powell playing Macbeth, promising a storm of rate increases. Or will The Merchants of Venice get their pound of flesh…. like they always do.
In the meantime,
Hold on to your allocation,
And ride this monthly phenomenon, I call…
‘The Tempest’
