Reading the Tea Leaves on Interest Rates
Three interest rate increases with more aggressive tapering in 2022 was signaled by the Federal Reserve Bank at this week’s FMOC meeting, reports CNBC 12/16/2021. Many believe that the tapering translates to a slowdown in government bond but-backs. On the onset of such information in the initial markets, basic materials and financials seemed to move up the most, areas that have benefited from past interest rate tightening periods. Now the question: will it be a lot of increases or a few? Historically, a plethora of increases have resulted in significant pullbacks in momentum assets. Therefore…. investors will now have to …. read the tea leaves …and make their adjustments…
